Thinker or Doer Journal Entry

Characterize yourself as a "thinker" or a "doer." In this respect what character in the play are you most like? How would you like to be different, or would you like to be different?

I characterize myself as a thinker and not a doer. Mainly for the sole reason that before I act or do anything I always think about it first. No matter what is, I always think about it in my head thinking, if what I am about to do is wrong or write or if there is another way to do it. My mind is the type that is always working or is always thinking about something analyzing every detail for unnecessary reasons. I think that is going to be a negative thing because when I am doing some of my school work especially for math or physics I always over think what the questions is asking, and when I do find the answer I think that it was too easy and the answer is something else and I always switch it. I think that I am like the ghost in the play because to me it seems that he thought about everything before he did it. For example he had to have thought about whom to tell the truth to, because just as he told Hamlet he could have easily told his wife the hold truth. Also he gave Hamlet some advice on how to deal with the situation because he had to consider the fact that no one would really believe Hamlet and they would think that he is just plain crazy, just as Reynaldo said. So I would classify myself as a thinker and as the Ghost in the book Hamlet.

I would most likely characterize myself as a thinker rather than a doer. A thinker is a person who doesn't act right away and instead thinks before he acts. A doer is a person who doesnt think before acting and goes right ahead and acts before thinking it through. I can relate myself to Hamlet, the son of lord Hamlet the previous king of Denmark. Hamlet is a thinker and demonstrates it in many ways throughout the play. While everyone else around him is acting as if nothing had happened he is quietly mourning for his father's death. He also shares with his close friends his anger towards his mothers marriage with his uncle, the new king of Denmark a few months after his fathers death, although he doesn't do anything to interfere or says nothing to his mother about the matter. When Hamlet discovers his fathers ghost he is told to revenge his death which was caused by his uncle, even when he is told this by his father he still believes in the good of all people and wants to have proof of his uncle's actions before doing anything. Hamlet's characterizations ; patience, warmhearted, and thinker, all relate to me in different ways. In conclusion, Hamlet and I relate as a thinker based on his personalities as shown in these few examples.

I, Estefany Frias, characterize myself as a thinker. I would compare myself to Hamlet because he is going through alot of stress with the knowledge he finds out and he is trying to cope/find a way a solution to it. Sometimes emotions get in the way of morals.
I would like to be different because sometimes being an active person is better than being a passive person. The problems that need to be fixed- should be fixed immediately rather then wait until it gets worse.

I would prefer to be both, have a balance because too much of one thing isn't good for anyone. Ideas should always be thought our first and then put into practice.
Comparing myself to Hamlet is a wake up call of some of my defects that I am blind to.

Task: Characterize yourself as a "thinker" or a "doer." In this respect what character in the play are you most like? How would you like to be different, or would you like to be different?

If I were to characterize myself as a “thinker” or a “doer” I think I would be a thinker because I feel compelled to think that sometimes you must analyze a situation first before doing anything about it. I feel that a thinker is someone who takes several steps in understanding the problem and then that person can eventually find the right solution for the issue being addressed.
In a play the category in which I feel I fall into may vary on how the play is written. For example in epic play of tragedies like “Oedipus Rex”, unlike Oedipus who did not take the time to analyze the situation and see what was the cause and effect of each encounter I feel I would‘ve went about the issues differently where I could‘ve been more analytical and see the pros and cons of the actions I can take. Therefore when he saw the oracle and believed it, he did not make an effort to fore see that instead of him running away from this prophecy he was running towards it.
Due his ignorance and the low effort of analyses that he conducted, he failed to see his own downfall in the most treacherous way. But in another heroic epic as “The Odyssey” I feel I can be the key character as homer was and overcome the encounters of the journey.
If I could be a different type of character I would like to be like Jekyll Hyde; a good person during the day and bad during the night. I like a character who could have some good and bad in them because to much good in a character will be boring but too much bad could be too violent. I think that in every story each character has a good and bad side, where they may be warm hearted but have to make cold blooded decisions or vice versa.

I characterize myself as a thinker because as a situation comes up i am always thinking for the solution to the problem. I also consider myself a thinker because i like to solve problems, as in chess when i take my time to think out and seek the best move on the board. This analyzing also helps me in life to think before i do and to watch my step. I can see my self as Horatio because he is a very careful person. He is always analyzing before he does anything. For example, in scene 4 verses 77-86 of Act1 Horatio is nervous and he speaks to Hamlet warning him not to go with the ghost. In a couple of sentences he flashes Hamlets life before him giving Hamlet excuses to not go with the Ghost. I believe that if i were a character in the play i would definitely be Horatio because of his thinking before doing.

Quote of the Night

"The end justifies the means" ~Machiavelli

Journal Entry

First off, I posted the above quote because it describes why I am a thinker, instead of a doer. A thinker is one who looks and surveys a situation before choosing a course of action, whereas a doer tends to just jump into ventures without any prompting. I am indeed a thinker in most situations, but I cannot deny that in some situations, I've acted without thinking things through too well.

For many situations, I like to get a fair perception of what or who I am dealing with. For example, during in-class competitions, I will check out who is on what team, and compare their strengths and weaknessess to my own. I feel that by knowing all or as much as possible of what is set before me helps me choose a reasonable course of action.

In the play, Hamlet I can relate to the ghost because his state of mind is to be cryptic and contemplating rather than open and revealing. In its first encounter with Horatio, Barnardo, and Marcellus, it enters pretty unexpectedly, and remains silent the entire time, in spite of the 3 men attempting to question it. The ghost proves to be of the "thinker" perspective, since it essentially views its opponents actions before deciding what it will do.

I can't say that I would want to be extremely different in this plane, because I can switch between "thinker" and "doer" depending on the severity and complexity of a situation(s). I would like to overall stay the same. I think that for my mindset, it suits me better since I tend to be more analytical and cautious rather than bold and rash. Moreover, an experience in my past diverts my attention away from the "doer" perspective in life. The experience I am referring to is the fire alarm incident.

During my sophomore year of high school, I had a problem that was troubling to overcome. On my way to class, I had been thinking hard about a viable solution to my issue; to no avail. I had walked past the fire alarm and pulled it. The bell sounded, and it was automatically rendered false alarm by the school safety officers. I had pulled this alarm in plain sight of a camera mounted on the opposite wall.

In the above instance, my rash acting without thinking had landed me in hot water, to say the least. The consequences for this were just south of cataclysmic, and had instilled a fundamental principle within me: Think first, act later. I reasoned with myself that I wasn't going to have anymore lapses in judgement which could lead to catastrophic results on my permanent record.

Despite the fact that quick action in this case led to a near disasterous result, I will use this kind of action when the situation warrants it. For example, in times of dire crisis where lives are in the balance, I would not contemplate for long (if at all) and I would just follow my instincts.

To conclude, based on prior experiences and my own habits, I see myself as a thinker instead of a doer most of the time. I would not like to be drastically different, just a bit more fine tuned along the thinker's perpective. I can see the pros and cons of both thinkers and doers, but that doesn't change my mind. I think that in the long run, the pros of thinkers outweigh the cons. In the doer's perspective, one mistake in the short run could essentially alter the long run, affectively stating the cons outweigh the pros.

Finally, I believe that the thinker's perspective is predicated on solid knowledge and good overall structure in terms of handling problems, whereas the doer's perspective relies heavily on being lucky. ~K*.

Jeriel, it is funny that you say that you tend to overthink in math as I just graded your AP multiple choice make-up test and many times you got a question incorrect after having crossed out your initial response. Perhaps you over think there too.

laurenesme said...

Elizabeth, I see your point that Hamlet is a thinker. But are his actions sincere or his he putting on a show?

laurenesme said...

Estefany, can you be specific and give some examples? How and when do emotions get in the way of actions? In the play? In life?

laurenesme said...

Stephanie, and what about in Hamlet? Also, the protagonist in The Odyssey is Odysseus, the "author," or person attributed with writing down the Greek stories and morals is Homer.

laurenesme said...

Frank, I think you would make an excellent Horatio!

Hi Kyle,

I remember the fire hydrant incident. Although, until your posting, it had slipped my mind completely. How wonderful that you learned from it and used it here!

I think that I characterize myself more of a thinker than a doer. I say that because I am a person who is like kind of shy and is sometime afraid to open up so before I want to do anything I have to think twice before expressing it out. There are sometimes when I refuse to care about something so instead of thinking about whether I should say it or do it, I just go for it. I think that being a thinker is good but then again it can be bad because I sometime over think and I end up not having time the action or sometime not doing it at all. The something goes for a doer, its good that I sometime just go for it but by going for it I can be wrong. So I think that I am like Hamlet because Hamlet is both a doer and a thinker but is more of thinker. As a thinker Hamlet thinks of ways to eliminate his uncle. He didn't just go to his uncle and attack him, he thinks of doing a play in order to see how guilty his uncle is, before he acts. I think that I would like to be different. I wish that I was both a doer and a thinker, that it would balance itself out, instead of being more of a thinker.

if i were to characterize myself as a thinker or doer. i would have to say a thinker because like most people i tend to think before i act. this is what i feel keeps people in the norm to scare to do anything spotainious.asfore the doers who in most cases tend to be free spirited. are the ones who are enjopying life to its fulles. if i had to compare myself to a character in the p,lay hasmlet by william shakespear it would none other then hamlet. who in my eyes is the biggest thinker in the play besides king clodius.who without thinking and having as way with words wouldnt be king. the reason why i compare myself to hamlet is that hes always having those little mo0ments where he is either thinking aloud but it is really to himself.in plays that is called an aside where is thinking asloud to audience.i also tend to have tose moment where i tone out of thye now to think but not aloud like hamlet i dont want to be considered insane.in conclusion one can not be just one of these two just like yin and yang the two hand in hand.

Ms. Laporte,

I think you're right to point out that Hamlet waits before he strikes. I mean, what if the ghost is lying and he murders a man who is innocent. It's an excellent example of the ambiguity in the play thus far and the complexity found in Hamlet's character.

laurenesme said...

Hi Chris,

Yes, we are both thinkers and doers as is Hamlet. I guess what we are trying to do really is to decide which of those traits seem to dominate for the characters. For example, Kind Claudius, more or a doer or a thinker? Bijs Moss Davenport, a doer, at the moment screaming her head off thus making it impossible for me to be a "thinker."

My personality and approach to different situations differs immensely, but if I had to characterize myself as either a “thinker” or “doer” I would be a thinker. When I am faced with a confrontation or even with daily tasks, I try to think and also reason things out. A character that reflects my personality in the play entitled Hamlet is Ophelia. I feel like she has the same mentality as myself because instead of doing something when she was obviously disturbed by Hamlets appearance and actions she spoke to someone about it. If she were a “doer” she would have done the same thing any “doer” would and either slap him for his aggressiveness or made other actions in retaliation to his doings.

As I sit and do this assignment of the top of my dome, with no premeditated thought, I am a doer. Life is to short and strenuous to think of every consequence of ones actions. If you contemplate every thing there is no fun in the end result. As you may know I will procrastinate things to do another. When an event comes up, I attend, with no set itinerary.
If I was to compare this to a character in the book it would be None of them. I see all of the characters in “Hamlet” as thinkers. The closest one to a doer would be Hamlet himself. He commits acts with impulse, spontaneity, and of just plan foolishness. In Act 2, Scene: I, Hamlet enters Ophelia’s private room with intentions of no good. Paints half-down, shirt off, holds her hand and looking at Ophelia as he wishes to do a sexual deed. Was this due to pure lust or had they committed this act of premarital sex before. Whatever had previously between them Ophelia wanted no part and Hamlet wanted one thing.
I would change my being a doer because it would help with me be more organized. It might help me in my studies and activities to have thought of how I would spend my precious time. On the other hand, I might not have experienced as many of the wondrous things I have if my life was planned for me.

i believe myself to be a doer as apposed to a thinker. i usually have minute thinking before i preform my actions and then after everything is done. I think about things after they have been done and how i can change them if the decision was negative. This can definetley be a negative thing as well as a positive. This is negative in a lot of different ways. I usually can do things without hearing all the directions, I do things as fast as i can so that I can move onto the next thing. I need to straighten out my priorities so that i can take time at the things that I do. i believe i am almost exactly like Hamlet in this play. he is a young man who acts before he thinks and sometimes that does not event well for him. He just acts according to his emotion and desire which is a quality i think i most definatley have. i finish all of my work fast so i can relax and do the things that i want and in the end i realize i forgot something to do and then have to play catch-up. i believe i AM Hamlet the "doer" and i dont think im satisfied with it.
